EMERGENCY FOOD SERVICES
Over the course of this week, the Wellington City Emergency Welfare Team has been activated to respond to Novel Coronavirus COVID-19 and its impact on our city’s residents. Please read the following information for reference to volunteering and providing essential services. Let us know if your food distribution operations are in need of volunteers and personal protective equipment (i.e. gloves and masks).
Food Redistribution:
Our team identified food distribution networks as being an essential service with far reaching impacts if food rescue is disrupted. We connected with the two largest distributors of food to food banks and food pick-up locations in Wellington. Both organisations have already taken steps to reduce risk of spread of illness, while maintaining their current distribution levels. We are contacting food banks and relevant agencies to confirm their model of service delivery moving forward. This will include asking if they are still operational and if they require more assistance e.g. volunteers. If you know someone who requires food assistance please encourage them (at a safe distance or over phone/email) to call the Wellington City Mission on 0800 245 0900.
Volunteers:
In the case that volunteers are a crucial part of maintaining the effective operation of an essential service, they may still be a part of these operations, however this is at the discretion of the services. Read the attached health and safety requirements for volunteers. In the case that a service is using volunteers, we will be looking to providing them with appropriate PPE as required.
MSD ADVICE FOR EMERGENCY FOOD SERVICES
MSD has issued guidance and information for foodbanks, food rescue and other community food services operating in the COVID-19 environment.
This is essential reading, and includes:
MSD is supporting Kore Hiakai Zero Hunger Collective to establish best practice guidelines for CDEM groups to work with the foodbank and food rescue sector. These should be issued by early next week. MSD is also supporting Kore Hiakai to collect information on which foodbanks, food rescue and other community food services are operating, including trends and issues. Kore Hiakai will be reporting this through to MSD on a regular basis. Kore Hiakai have set up a foodbank survey where you can provide them with your information. We would be enormously appreciative if you could complete this.

Our Services at Alert Level 1
As part of this reset, we transformed and refreshed our Drop-in Centre space, and have renamed it our ‘Community Lounge’. With a pop of colour, carpet, and couches, we wanted to provide our manuhiri and guests in our community with a mana-enhancing space to relax, and enjoy the company of others. Our Community Lounge is open five days a week, 9:30am to 3:30pm.
You will be welcomed in with a smile, and some glorious baking by our volunteers.
